Call for Entries: Piña and Abaca Weaving Competition 2025

HABI: The Philippine Textile Council invites skilled piña and abaca weavers to demonstrate their artistry in its two premier competitions—The 8th Lourdes Montinola Piña Weaving Competition and the 4th Eloisa Hizon Gomez Abaca Weaving Competition.

  

The 8th Lourdes Montinola Piña Weaving Competition

 

Liniwan Category Mechanics:

  • Minimum length of 2 meters long
  • No structural limitations on width
  • Fabric must be plain (no design)
  • Additional points awarded for the use of natural dyes
  • Submissions must include a list of materials used and a detailed description of the processes involved in making the piece
  • Entries must be packed with care and must be submitted to the HABI Office at #962 May Street, Mandaluyong City, Metro Manila.

Judging Criteria:

  • 50% Quality of Making
  • 30% Quality of Innovation and Use of Imagination
  • 20% Overall Impact and Aesthetics

 

Pure Piña Category Mechanics:

  • Minimum length of 2 meters long
  • No structural limitations on width
  • Additional points awarded for the use of natural materials and dyes
  • Submissions must include a list of materials used and a detailed description of the processes involved in making the piece
  • Entries must be packed with care and must be submitted to the HABI Office at #962 May Street, Mandaluyong City, Metro Manila.

Judging Criteria:

  • 40% Quality of Making
  • 30% Quality of Innovation and Use of Imagination
  • 30% Design Elements

 

Natural Fiber Blends with Piña (Seda/Jusi/Cotton/ Abaca) Category Mechanics:

  • Minimum length of 2 meters long
  • No structural limitations on width
  • Additional points awarded for the use of natural materials and dyes
  • Submissions must include a list of materials used and a detailed description of the processes involved in making the piece
  • Entries must be packed with care and must be submitted to the HABI Office at #962 May Street, Mandaluyong City, Metro Manila.

Judging Criteria:

  • 40% Quality of Making
  • 30% Quality of Innovation and Use of Imagination
  • 30% Design Elements

 

Prizes:

  • Cash Prize (One winner will be selected in each category)
  • Special recognition for "Young Weaver" (under 30 years old)

The 4th Eloisa Hizon Gomez Abaca Weaving Competition

 

Ikat Category Mechanics:

  • This category focuses on the artistic design and dyeing technique
  • Entries must consist of 100% Abaca
  • Minimum length of 2 meters, Maximum length of 6 meters
  • No structural limitations on width
  • Additional points for use of natural dye
  • Entries must be packed with care and must be submitted to the HABI Office at #962 May Street, Mandaluyong City, Metro Manila.

Judging Criteria:

  • 30% Creativity and Design
  • 30% Quality of Weaving
  • 20% Dyeing or Other Forms of Coloring
  • 20% Fulfillment of Requirements

 

Abaca Craft Category Mechanics:

  • This category focuses on methods demonstrated such as, but not limited to,
    macrame, crochet, tatting, bobbin lace making
  • Entries must consist of 100% Abaca
  • Minimum length of 2 meters
  • No structural limitations on width
  • Entries must be packed with care and must be submitted to the HABI Office at #962 May Street, Mandaluyong City, Metro Manila.

Judging Criteria:

  • 30% Creativity and Originality
  • 30% Skill and Technique
  • 30% Design Elements
  • 10% Fulfillment of Requirements

 

Nipis Category Mechanics:

  • This category focuses on weaving skill and uniformity without embellishments
  • Entries must consist of 100% Abaca
  • Minimum length of 2 meters, Maximum length of 6 meters
  • No structural limitations on width
  • No embelishment and focuses on skill level of weaving techniques demonstrated
  • Entries must be packed with care and must be submitted to the HABI Office at #962 May Street, Mandaluyong City, Metro Manila.

Judging Criteria:

  • 40% Weaving Technique
  • 30% Evenness and Quality
  • 15% Design Elements
  • 15% Fulfillment of Requirements

 

Prize:

  • Cash prize (One winner will be selected in each category)
