Weavers Rise Through Training at Panganiban Abaca Weaving Center

Earlier this year, the quiet town of Panganiban in Catanduanes began to stir with the sound of looms and the energy of transformation. A Basic Handloom Weaving Workshop was launched, unlocking new opportunities, skills, and purpose for a group of local women eager to weave their way toward empowerment. This initiative is the result of a collaborative effort involving DOST-PTRI, PSTO Catanduanes V, DTI Catanduanes, PhilFIDA, and the local government unit (LGU).

For many of the participants, it was a first step beyond familiar routines and into an inspiring world of artistry and enterprise. Guided by the expertise of DOST-PTRI, they immersed themselves in Skills Enhancement Training, mastering traditional weaving techniques while exploring contemporary designs and learning the essentials of product development and quality control.

Eighteen determined women took part in the hands-on training, learning to transform Philippine cotton and Catanduanes abaca into market-ready, handwoven textiles. At first, there was hesitation but with each passing day, their confidence grew. Threads became patterns, and patterns turned into possibility.

More than just technical instruction, the workshop became a catalyst for personal and cultural transformation. It deepened their sense of identity, fostered lasting friendships, and reignited pride in their shared heritage. What began as a skills-building initiative soon evolved into a powerful movement of self-discovery and community revival.

Now, a new chapter begins…

The Abaca Weaving Center in Panganiban is set to rise! Thanks to the generosity of a committed donor! This permanent space will serve not only as a creative hub but as a lasting symbol of resilience, innovation, and local pride.

Adding even more color, literally, to their journey, HABI: The Philippine Textile Council recently donated a vibrant palette of locally dyed thread, inspiring fresh creativity among them. The workshop now buzzes with anticipation as new designs take shape, infused with culture and innovation.

And this October, the weavers’ hard work will come full circle. Their creations will be available for sale at the HABI Booth during the Likhang HABI Market Fair at SPACE, One Ayala, their first major public showcase! It’s more than an exhibition; it’s a moment of visibility, recognition, and celebration!
