The Panganiban Weavers Association took another meaningful step forward during their Advanced Handloom Weaving Training as they learned to create weaving patterns. These designs are exclusively developed by DOST-PTRI for Panganiban to help safeguard the community from issues involving the use of traditional designs.

The designs are currently being applied as Industrial Designs through both the Philippine Textile Research Institute (PTRI) and the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL). Industrial designs are a form of intellectual property protection that preserve the unique visual appearance and originality of a product. Through this initiative, the weavers not only continue to strengthen their technical weaving skills but also gain a deeper understanding of the importance of protecting indigenous and community-based designs from unauthorized reproduction and commercial use.
By combining creativity, innovation, and intellectual property protection, the initiative empowers the Panganiban weaving community to preserve its cultural identity while developing designs that are uniquely their own. In fact, the Panganiban weavers were even able to create two additional designs beyond the target number of patterns!
Here are some of the Panganiban weave designs:

At a time when many traditional textile patterns and cultural designs face issues of imitation, misuse, and lack of proper recognition, intellectual property protection becomes an important tool in preserving the identity and integrity of local weaving traditions. By documenting and developing original weave patterns under IPOPHL industrial designs, the Panganiban weavers are taking meaningful steps toward asserting ownership of their creativity and ensuring that the community behind these designs is properly acknowledged and respected.

Indeed, these patterns are valuable creations that deserve protection for future generations. Each weave design reflects the identity, artistry, and craftsmanship of the community while opening opportunities to develop distinctive products that proudly represent Panganiban.
