At Likhang Maragondon, every textile begins with a promise: "Heritage in your hands, crafted with purpose."
That promise is rooted in the rich weaving tradition of Maragondon, Cavite—a town where handloom weaving has flourished since the 1700s. For more than three centuries, weaving has been part of their community's identity, passed down from one generation to the next through skill, patience, and dedication.
But in 2019, that legacy stood on the brink of disappearing. Only two elderly handloom weavers remained. And because of that, Likhang Maragondon set out not only to preserve the craft, but to revive it. By working closely with local artisans and training new weavers, the initiative has helped breathe new life into a tradition that might otherwise have been lost.
This is why every woven piece is worth every thread.
Behind every meter of fabric are hours of meticulous work, generations of inherited knowledge, and the commitment of artisans who continue to practice a craft shaped by history. Each thread represents more than technical skill. It reflects a community's resilience and a shared determination to keep its cultural heritage alive.
Likhang Maragondon also believes that every woven piece deserves to be understood and appreciated beyond its beauty. Each product is accompanied by detailed information on its packaging, including the textile's place of origin, pattern or design, dimensions, fiber composition, color, intended use, and recommended care instructions.
By providing this information, Likhang Maragondon helps consumers better understand the story behind the piece they are purchasing, appreciate the craftsmanship that went into creating it, and care for it so it can be enjoyed for years to come.
This approach also reflects HABI: The Philippine Textile Council's efforts to align with emerging global standards through the introduction of product tagging for all Likhang HABI Market Fair vendors. The initiative encourages vendors to showcase products that celebrate the richness, creativity, and diversity of Philippine textiles while helping consumers make more informed and meaningful purchases. It is our hope that more local artisans, craftspeople, and vendors will embrace product tagging, helping elevate the appreciation, visibility, and long-term sustainability of Philippine handcrafted textiles.
Choosing a locally woven textile also means investing in people. It supports sustainable livelihoods for artisans, creates opportunities for younger generations to learn the craft, and helps ensure that weaving remains a viable tradition for years to come.
