From Fiber to Fabric: Training Tomorrow’s Weavers in Panganiban, Catanduanes

We are proud to share the successful launch of the first-ever Basic Handloom Weaving Workshop in Panganiban, Catanduanes, a vital component of our ongoing Abaca Weaving Center Project. Held from March 24–28 at St. James the Greater Parish, the 5-day workshop introduced participants to the timeless craft of handloom weaving, using abaca, a locally sourced and culturally significant fiber.

Day 1 set the tone with warm introductions, engaging lectures, and an immersive hands-on session on loom setup, including warping and beaming. This productive kickoff laid the foundation for the rest of the training.

On Day 2, participants dove into the essential steps of loom dressing, a crucial step in preparing the loom for weaving. The process begins with beaming, followed by drawing-in, denting, and finally, tying. These foundational steps ensure the loom is properly set up for successful weaving, enabling participants to create finely made textiles.

These skills are essential for producing intricate fabric patterns. With the expert guidance of Melody Y. Laxamana, Senior Research Analyst at the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI), participants received personalized instruction and hands-on demonstrations that boosted their confidence and sharpened their skills.

Days 3 and 4 introduced the apprentices to the art of tying, weaving, weft techniques, and knotting. By the end of Day 4, participants were already weaving on their looms, skillfully transforming Philippine cotton and Catanduanes abaca into beautiful, market-ready textiles.

The workshop culminated in a showcase of their early creations—an inspiring display of dedication and talent. Thanks to DOST-PTRI, four upright handloom machines were provided, equipping our apprentice weavers not only with skills but also with the tools to begin small-scale production.

This initiative is more than just a skills training program—it's the seed of a sustainable local weaving industry, one that empowers women, supports local livelihoods, and strengthens the abaca value chain by merging tradition with innovation.
