As part of their Guided Practice Training homework from Ms. Gayle Zialcita, the Panganiban Weavers Association completed their weaving exercises and design outputs that showcased the knowledge and techniques they learned throughout the course.
Here are some of their works showcasing innovative weaving techniques, particularly the integration of Abaca Tinagak with cotton:
Abaca and abaca cotton lanterns
Abaca Twine rug
Abaca round placemat and table runner
Hammock and beach mat
This activity was followed by the Advanced Handloom Weaving Training wherein weavers gained valuable experience from the Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI). They conducted lectures on Advanced Handloom Weaving, starting with a recap of Basic Handloom Weaving principles before introducing Weaver-Controlled and Loom-Controlled weave designs.

Weavers were also taught various methods of modifying the character of woven fabrics, explored Philippine indigenous weaves, and gained insights into Digital Handloom Weaving. They also learned about Social Enterprise, as well as product costing and pricing.

Beyond weaving techniques, the course also focused on developing the weavers’ technical and creative skills. They also learned how to draft weave patterns, perform design analysis, and interpret textile structures, which are essential competencies in creating innovative and high-quality woven products.
Panganiban Weavers Association with Catanduanes Governor Patrick Azanza, Melody Y. Laxamana and Dary Barbasan of DOST-PTRI, Supervising Science Research Specialist Abelisa D. Evangelista and Project Manager Christine Solo of DOST-Catanduanes, Christine Solo of LGU-Tourism, DOST-Catanduanes Project Technical Assistant I Matthew T. Olapani, and representatives from HABI: The Philippine Textile Council
On the final day of the training, Patrick Alain Azanza visited the group and shared words of encouragement that inspired the weavers to continue growing as a strong and resilient weaving community.
The outputs from the training reflected the dedication and craftsmanship of the participating weavers, highlighting their growing expertise and commitment to preserving and innovating Philippine textile traditions. We can’t wait to showcase their final works at the Likhang HABI Market Fair this October!
Padayon, Team Catanduanes!
